This Professional Kora differs from our Standard Kora in that it has 22 strings and includes a built-in Piezo Pad pick-up (microphone) with a built-in jack connection enabling the kora to be be plugged straight into a PA or recording system. The 22 chrome machine heads, are 6 bass and 16 trebles, black tail strings with a dark red pad.

Fluorocarbon strings are used on the professional kora, giving a brighter tone, increased resonance and more volume.  (ctd below)

 

We reserve the largest and best kora bodies for these koras,

The kora body is treated on the inside of the calabash to harden and strengthen it. This also increases the resonance and brightens the tone.

The neck is made either from Maple, Sapele. We will choose either matching or contrasting based on aesthetics. The bridge is made from Bubinga Keno or Maple.  All can be stained to a darker colour if preferred. Gloss or Matt varnish as preferred.

Note: All of the above options can be chosen individually by buying a Standard Kora and adding those elements that you want.  We put them together like this in what we refer to as a Professional model and make it slightly cheaper than adding all the elements individually.

 

We often refer to this kora as the Cassamance Kora as it is in the southern region of Senegal - The Cassamance, that many kora players add extra strings to their koras.
