We’ve started the summer season of UK workshops in Skenfrith in South East Wales. We were able to include a trip to Hay on the Friday night to see Toumani Diabate perform. He and his band then came for lunch and met our participants. He sat and helped teach them the song Jarabi which was an unexpected bonus!
After lunch Jess sang while Toumani and Josh accompanied her. a wonderful moment which was caught on video and will be published shortly. The band were almost at the end of their tour, with only Wychwood left that night, then home to Mali. Many were taken by surprise to hear such an authentic rendition of Miniamba in the courtyard of a small Welsh village hall but it certainly seemed to make home seem that little bit closer.
